Kerala Palakkadan Matta

Palakkadan Matta Rice, or Rosematta Rice, is native to Kerala’s Palakkad district. This rice comes in two varieties: long and short. The long matta is known as Vadi, while a short matta is known as Unda. The Kerala Matta rice is high in nutrients and has a distinctive flavor, appearance, and taste. Its red pericarps contain more fiber and nutrition than white rice. It also contains Vitamin B6, which stimulates the production of red blood cells. Moreover, it contains a wide variety of nutrients, including Magnesium and Calcium. The fat-free and obesity-lowering properties are additional advantages. 

While it can be prepared in many ways, it is commonly boiled and served with coconut-based curries and spicy flavors such as curry leaves, ginger, red chillies and green chillies. It is used to make different sweet and savory dishes such as idiyappam, kheer, and payasam.
